sum. just angel!reader having a staring problem, and perturbing dean’s sleep with it.

includes. fluff, pet names (duck, duckling, sweetheart), it’s my first drabble have mercy, english is not my first language.

Dean jolted awake, his heart felt like it wanted to jump out of his chest. He wasn't sure what had disturbed him so much —a nightmare, maybe, or that weird squeaking sound the bunker floor made from time to time— but something felt... off. He blinked a few times, trying to get rid of the drowsiness and blurriness in his eyes. Then he saw you.

You. Fuckin' duck. He thought.

You were standing perfectly still in the corner of the room, your hands clasped together in front of you, staring deeply at Dean.

"What the fuck-" Dean wanted to yell at you, but he'd be lying if he said he wasn't used to it. It was maybe the fifth time this week you'd taken it upon yourself to wake him or Sam with your eerie, silent presence. "Duckling, what are you doing here?" he asked as he sat up in bed.

You stared at him for another few seconds, blinking slowly. "You were asleep."

"Yes, I know. It's what people do at night." He rubbed his face, trying to make sense of the situation, and maybe trying to talk some sense into you. "Why are you always just... standing there? Watching me like a damn freak?"

You tilted your head slightly, as though considering your words. "You looked peaceful."

Dean froze, caught between a sense of confusion and sheer disbelief. "You woke me up because I looked peaceful?"

"No," you corrected, your voice as calm as ever. "You woke up on your own. I was merely observing."

"Observing what, exactly?"

For brief moments, you hesitated. Your expression was hard to read, since you just kept staring at him, but that question seemed to have made you think.

"Humans are... fragile. They take on too much. They carry the weight of their sins even unconsciously. I was ensuring that you remained unharmed."

Dean stayed just like you for a few seconds; still and staring, blinking slowly as if the gears in his brain were being dusted off. He opened and closed his mouth like a fish, trying to find the words.

"So you were angelically babysitting me?" he said, confused. How was he supposed to take that? Sure, it was... Cute, in a way. His chest tightened fondly at the thought of how much you cared for him, even if you showed it in such a weird way.

But still, it was fucking terrifying to be jumpscared by two shiny eyes staring at his soul in the middle of the night.

"Yes." you said, matter-of-factly, a tiny smile gracing your face, which only made Dean feel his chest tighten even more.

"Listen, sweetheart– I don't mind you watching me sleep, okay? Even if you look like a freak, I don't mind, but you should try to kick that habit. It's not very... uh, how do I say it? Human." Dean tried to explain it as simply as possible, but it was hard when you were looking at him with those big eyes, all wide and paying as much attention as if he were an exotic animal. "You scared five lifetimes out of me standing in that corner like an extra in horror movie. I'm just saying, others might react worse than me."

You blinked and looked down at your hands. "I didn't intend to frighten you. I'm simply drawn to your existence." You said softly. "If you would rather, I may go."

Dean shouldn't feel bad, but he did. It was like scolding a puppy for chewing on a shoe. He knew you were getting used to the Earth and how humans coexisted with each other, it wasn't entirely your fault you were a social misfit.

"Stay if you want," Dean flopped back onto his pillow with a groan, covering his face with his upper arm. "But I'd recommend you try doing other things while Sam and I asleep, believe me, anything is better than watching two idiots snore." He yawned.

Dean peeked out from behind his arm to watch you move toward the door, though you threw one last glance over your shoulder.

You hesitate, moving your lips as if you want to say something else. Finally, you nod. "Very well. Sleep well, Dean." Your gaze lingered for a moment, soft and curious, before vanishing down the hallway.

As soon as you left, Dean exhaled noisily. "Angels," he muttered, covering his head with the blanket. "Fucking weirdos."

Rikidou Satou

Equally could be platonic or romantic.

I want him as a yandere so bad. I think he’s perfect, and not just because our quirks would be similar—

He is more of a tame yandere and really just wants to protect you, but respects you so much. So let me explain.

Is the type to wanna baby you, and 100% will when the time is needed but he also loves when you feel confident. So he’s not the type to wanna get your hero license taken away. But doesn’t like you on your own fighting either.

Pocket full or treats for you. Take down a villain? Treat. Get the tests right? Treat. SMILE AT HIM? Treat for you.

He’s not as crazy as his classmates but can be convinced to do anything that is needed.

Satou wants to be noticed by you since he is more in the background, or not in the loud groups that do get your attention. So he tries to be the best at things they aren’t just for you to be around him. Like baking sweets for you anytime you- does guilt trip you and put you on the spot sometimes.

“I know everyone is busy, I just thought you’d be my taste tester- No worries, I’ll just wait until next week.” Stuff like that to get you to feel a bit bad for rejecting him.

Alone, Satou would be a comfortable yandere to deal with but when he’s group up, can be worse. He’s is always going to be the reasonable one.

 Doesn’t have a big shrine of you, but does keep a shoebox under his bed with things you have given or lost. He isn’t creepy so nothing is weird in this pile. Literally just takes things you forgot behind in class or in battle.

What would happen if they become dangerous? Or more crazy? Group or alone.

Still big on the chill side.

When the group/or him kidnapped you, he’s going to just be a friend and try to stick up for you when he can.

WILL FIGHT FOR YOU TO GET SOME SUN! He knows it’s important.

If he or the others need to punish you, tries to get you a light punishment. And really easy to sucker into sneaking you snacks, or just giving.

Tho, he will never be the one giving you any type of punishment. Like locking you in your room or anything else.

If he’s alone yandere, he’s taking away the internet and your game console….Which lasts about two days before your begging gets to him.

Kouji Kouda

More platonic yandere but he’s a cutie so, whatever you want boo.

You know how I feel about quite sunshine characters— let me cook.

He is tame- he’s a sweet yandere to have and much like satou….But he does have some tendency that could be really creep.

Stalker this little guy— has birds or other small animals watching your every move. Outside your window at night, walking to class, training.

He’s not dangerous and would never hurt you. Also respects you as a person, wouldn’t take your hero licenses away, likes when you fight beside him. So you have that going for you.

He’s using cute animals to worm his way to your side and in your life more. If you’re the type to not wanna hang out with anyone, oops- how did that bunny get into you room? So he’s using animals to be near you. And it works most of the time. Because he is quite and pleasant to be around so you let him in your room while you pet the animals. I see you guys study or doing homework together and just chilling in your room in silence.

He wants to baby you but is too shy to do anything, please— would explode if he pets your head even once. He is the type to wanna comfort you but doesn’t say much, just kinda lets you cry on his shoulders if you need it.

“Bunny?” Shoves a bunny in your face while tears stream down your cheeks.

Freaks out if you get hurt. He’s screaming when you got a bloody knee from tripping and is running to get a first aid kit and the others. It’s weird, he sees you get punched and kick, and hates it, but freaks out over the little things.

Has, and will cry again if you get a paper cut.

He’s not Alone. I don’t see him really as a yandere to not work in a group, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be. If he’s alone his tendency are more under the radar and will never act on anything.

Doesn’t have a shrine. Doesn’t really take things from you either. But will place things you give him in a box where they are nice and safe. Also will have a picture of you together on his wall.

What would happen if they become dangerous? Or more crazy? Group or alone.

If he were to ever actually become crazy like the others it would be more dangerous.

He has animals, can control any of them. So, he would have poisonous animals or insects. And will cause harm if he’s corrupted.

Like I said, if he’s with a group he’s okay with them kidnapping you- but alone I don’t think he would.

If he’s all by himself, he’s somehow getting you to move in with him.

Doesn’t like you getting punished and I don’t think would ever actually punish you. IF he had to, I think he limited your animal hours down.

Tooru Hagakure

Crazy cult fangirl yandere. Literally she’s crushing on you and fangirl so hard over you just looking at her. So she’s romantic, or if you want platonic. Wouldn’t force you to have feelings for her but he feelings stay the same. (at least in this fic)

What doesn’t this girl do? Stalks you everywhere, she can’t be seen. Steals your stuff all the time when your not looking.

Does baby you. But also hypes you up to be like a god. Thinks everything you do is better then anyone on earth or the galaxy. You could literally sit down and she’s wonder “How can they be so cute?” PLEASE SOMEONE COME GET HER-

She could be one to take your hero license away or not. Depends on your quirk or her level of craziness.

If you have a quirk that’s not getting much better or she thinks isn’t going to keep you safe in the long run- kiss your freedom goodbye. But if you have a overpowered quirk and are in the top five in class. She’s freaking out.

I don’t think she would hurt you. So you don’t have to worry about her doing things really messes up. Her love is just overwhelming to handle, even platonically.

She’s touching you 24/7. Playing with your hair even if you push her away, taking your hand in hers to lead you somewhere, kissing your cheek when you do well.

Love letter yandere anyone? Leaves letters in your locker or bag every few days. How good you look each day, telling you she wants you to kiss her or protect her, to hold your hand for longer then a few minutes, where she wants to get married—

Honestly, she will do anything you ask her to. Because you asked her, only her— you need her! She will run off to do what you want her too. If she’s annoying you, all you have to do is ask her to go get you a snack and she’s out of your room like the flash to get it.

Takes millions of pictures of you— is the class picture dealer. Like image her in the dead of night, hoodie on, making a trade off of your pictures. “What do you want? I got ones of them sleeping, got one fighting a villain” trades for almost anything. Other pictures they took, things of yours, even cash.

Has a shine for sure! It could be in her locked closet, or a really big box that she pulls out and sets up right before bed and prays to it like a god. Has made a you doll and kisses it before bed.

“Please, let them look at me tomorrow— let them touch me in anyway! I’ll take anything”

Mentioned before she steals so she has your clothes, jewelry if you wear it, even your homework you threw out just to see your handwriting. Pictures too…..I wouldn’t put it passed her to have hair.

If you tell her you like the outfit she has on, wears it and similar things from now on. Maybe she was wearing Minas or the other girls clothes. She will burn her own and replace them immediately of things you like.

Doesn’t really get more dangerous because she’s not a “dangerous” yandere. She’s just a stalking/worshipper yandere. Kinda like your own personal cult follower if you will.

Only way she would hurt or kill is with the other girls. And even then it’s a stretch. Unless it’s a female that she or the group doesn’t know, then she would hurt someone.

Wouldn’t kidnap you on her own though, like Kouda she will trick you into living with her. But wouldn’t be mad if the group wanted to kidnap you.

Shocker- wouldn’t punish you and really tries to tell the others not to.

Cult type again, wants to be hurt or have the restrictions that you do just to know what you’re going through- even will let you yell at her to let your frustrations out. She’s there for anything you need!!

Punishment on her own is trying to ignore you for a while, but ends up only lasting five minutes until she’s apologizing with tears.

Fumikage Tokoyami

I think also as equal to romantic or platonic.

Silent watcher type vibes. He stalks a bit, and his behaviors are hidden. Only ones that know about them are his classmates.

Watches you like a hawk- Ha! He really enjoys just watching you from a distance for a while, how you look when it’s quiet and your studying alone. What interests you do alone. And he doesn’t mind watching you hang out with others, he likes to see you smile. (Only with his classmates)

Kinda babies you. He just pushes you out of harms way even if you took down ten villains, “I’ve got you.” So that’s kinda babying. He knows your capable but he just really wants to be your hero. (Hero by skillet) But don’t get him wrong, he finds it cute if you’re powerful and take down villains! Loves the look of justice in your eyes.

Would he take away your hero license? Yes and no. Depends.

Can be easy agreed to it with others and by himself, but if someone makes a good point to keep you in the hero agencies he’s also willing. More Satou a bit when it comes down to it. He just wants you fighting low level villains, nothing high threat and will be there by your side.

When he does get out of the shadows he’s so chill to be around. Just stays by you and does anything you are doing. Studying? He’ll sit with you. Need someone to play a game? He’ll be happy to.

Gets flustered to. Complement this man and he’s hiding in the corner like Tamaki. Pat his shoulder and he’s gone.

He’s kinda just around you, not too chatty but not quite if you want him to be. He really just wants to be someone you want around.

Has a poem journal that he writes in daily and all of them are about you. I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Jiro turn them into songs.

Would never ever hurt you! Who do you think this man is? I feel like he would raise his voice once out of concern once and then beat himself up over it and feel so unworthy of your attention that he wouldn’t speak to you for a month.

Small shrine, like a deity’s. Candle, rocks and other things you might like, about two photos and keeps it hidden in his closet. Lights it and sits at it while reading over his journal, then once again in the morning before going to class.

Dark shadow is kinda different then him and will shoot out of his body to talk to you. It’s so different. Tokoyami is sitting at his desk across the room while dark shadow is talking your ear off. That shadow really loves you and is so annoying, but it’s cute. Is the voice of chaos in Tokoyamis head.

“Steal their jacket, I wanna sleep with it at night.” “I could slap Izuku away from them—” “Did y/n see me while training? Did I look cool?”

Has stolen your jackets mostly, again anything you have left that he can find but isn’t too worried about it. I think the only reason he actually has the jackets is because of darkshadow taking them but likes them to much to give it back.

What would happen if they become dangerous? Or more crazy? Group or alone.

Dangerous? He could be but normally no, unless he snaps or is under the influence of the group.

Darkshadow on the other hand would be at night, seriously really. Have you seen him when he’s not controlled? Imagine as a yandere.

But alone I don’t think so. They both are kinda chill, even might let you live a normal life as they are your guardian. Like buying a apartment near you, watch you grow old as they do too.

Probably wouldn’t kidnap you. And if romantic, will try and make you fall for him so he doesn’t have to kidnap you! It’s so much better if your willing to love him.

Might hurt someone mildly if they are too close, might also kill somebody if they are trying to hurt you.

If kidnapped by the group he’s trying to make you feel better, get you out into the sun would be nice.

Punishment with him is light, will lock you in your room for a week, with limited screen time thats only tv for two hours a day, but of course feeds you everything you need.

But with the group he’s not going along with anything they say. Hates strong punishments they give you, and has had to be knocked out to get him to stop fighting back.

Yuuga Aoyama

I am mostly writing for platonic but imagine what you want!!

Fanboy Cult and worshiper. He’s strange to describe. Thinks the world of you, thinks you are better then everyone else, but “You could use a better wardrobe.” You know? Might see you as a doll of some sort.

Thinks he can “fix” you imperfections that still make you so much better then the rest. Outfits, your hair, makeup if you wear it, how to make yourself a flashy hero. He has pointers for everything!

He really does love you tho. Will get you a red carpet and have you walk it all day long anywhere you go because you deserve it.

If you have a powerful quirk? He’s jumping behind his savior. You wanna protect him, you’re the most precious on the earth. So he pays you back by being your most loyal follower!

Meets with Hagakure to do trades of your stuff he steals because he’s constantly in your room, even if you try and push him out. Like I mean this man has bags full of stuff from over the year of school and everything.

“I got hair brushes, toothbrushes, earphones” the list goes on and on for dealer Aoyama.

Even if not romantic, he’s laying on you while watching a movie, that’s just him- and giving you cheese! If your lactose intolerance, he found a way to give you fake cheese that’s so expensive.

Does baby you so much as try and guide you like a personal assistant. “Straighten your back” or “use more of your leg power” in training or taking pictures, anything you can think of. “Throws” out your clothes and gets you new ones that make you look better. Like I said, you’re a doll and he’ll pull the strings!

Using so much guilt trip on you, you might be color blinded to a red flag. Hangouts, you said you would? Why are you lying, did you forget you promised?.He is trying to get every ounce of attention from you he can, and if it means making you feel a little insecure he will do it.

But is still a follower so he will try and impress you himself, after all you’re his god! Need something expensive, take his money! Eat his food. He doesn’t really care what you need, just call on him and your wish is his command.

What would happen if they become dangerous? Or more crazy? Group or alone.

The exact same if in a group of alone. He’s obsessed over you, and ready to be your follower.

Doesn’t hurt or kill anyone. It’s not his style, might ruin a nail or get blood on his clothes. No he’ll leave that to the others.

Kidnap? Not alone, he’s making you move in with him in a big mansions where you have everything you want. Pays for everything so you can live like a god.

But not against it in a group, still decorates you new home with things you like. He doesn’t care, he’s just going to be with you!

Punishment— Taking away your cards so you can’t shop. For a week, you can’t use his money.

“I’m not cruel,” he whines as he places things he bought for you on the table, “I just said you couldn’t buy anything.” Feels so bad he caved and buys shit for you, only to give you back the cards.

I feel like gift giving and money is his way of showing his love. You need him- you can’t leave him if you need money to survive.

Group punishment: no matter what happens he’s going to buy you shit to make you smile again. Wouldn’t be in the same area if they do something other then locking you in a room.

Mashirao Ojiro

Romantic, but also platonic and wouldn’t force you to like him back.

“Friendly” obsessed protecter yandere. If romantic, he’s the secretly in love with you best friend.

Even if your quirk is more powerful then is, he’ll still stand in the way of danger for you, his darling.

Masks his behaviors well, because he’s just a cool loving best friend. Nothing weird about it. I believe he started out slow, even if he was still obsessed with you. If the class was acting on their tendencies, he pulls back and makes himself look like the most uninterested one there.

So you obviously go for him and befriend him. While the others flock towards you and constantly bicker over you. Ojiro got your back for just being a friend! And he really plays it so well, man manipulated you into thinking he’s normal. 😐

Until he wasn’t, or you were more comfortable now and best friends. He started to touch you more but not as often as the others— and in subtle ways. Like pats on the head, shoulders, then helping you train and pushing your body around. Then comes your head on his shoulders, or his arm around your shoulders. He’s still soft about it and never does it for long.

He doesn’t baby you, but teases you like best friends do. Or helps you when you need to be help. The only time I see him “babying” you is in combat because he doesn’t want you to get hurt. (Boy- you just took down a super villain)

You have access to his tail at anytime of the day, keeps it looking nice just for you and allows you to do anything. Like put bows on it, braid it, you wanna put some semi-permanent dye on it? Go ahead.

Does stalk you sometimes but hardly ever. Or, follows you around. He does have a tracker placed on your phone so he knows exactly where you are.

Hang outs in your room all the time just to play video games and study. He’s always trying to make you laugh.

He does steal. Leaving things in his room? He doesn’t remember you leaving it, maybe check your room! Almost anything you leave in his room is his now, and boy does he gaslight you into thinking your crazy.

Shrine! Shrine! Closet shrine for sure so he doesn’t knock anything over. Pictures, things he stole, flowers, small notes he’s written to you, anything.

Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss. Can’t tell his tendencies because he hides them, or makes you feel insane for thinking he’s weird. I means, he’s nothing like the rest of them so maybe you are just paranoid.

“Don’t sweat it, I once thought denki would hide in my room to play with my tail,” he just smiles and shrugs off your accusations. Inside his screaming to not mess this up.

What would happen if they become dangerous? Or more crazy? Group or alone.

Not dangerous alone, not dangerous at all even if he went crazy.

Listen I love this man but he wouldn’t scare me as a yandere. Because he is still sweet and loving, even if he is a little crazy.

But he would beat up people don’t get me wrong, or threaten them anonymously and frighten them so much. Really just threats people to stay away from you. Has giving his fair share of black eyes.

Kidnap? Yeah, I think he would. I feel like this guy would kidnap you if he wanted to. Because you trust him and it’s easy to let you guard down around him, so he slips something in your drink and takes you to your new home!!

So he is okay with the group kidnapping you, and wants to do it in a non traumatic way. 

Punishment: might chain you up and lock you in a room, but he’s not cruel. Gives you good meals but no desserts and plays a movie for you every day for entertainment. Only stops when you’re ready to say your sorry for what you did.

Group punishment: doesn’t wanna hear about hard punishment if you get them, so he just visit you when it’s all over or going on. He will try and comfort you like he always did, let you pet his tail and even wants to hold you while you cry!

“I’m sorry pumpkin, but this is all for your own good! Now just cry and eat your dinner.”

Mezou Shouji

Lemme start off by saying this, I don’t write for him a lot- BUT BOY DO I LOVE THIS MAN.

Can be seen as platonic or romantic, kinda going for both.

Protective sneaky watcher yandere. A lot like Tokoyami in so many ways, likes watching from a far. I think he wouldn’t know how to express his feels because he just feels so much and doesn’t wanna scare you off. So when is around you, he’s silent at irst.

Has the main three type of protective behaviors, like pulling up behind him or fighting for you. Doesn’t care if you can snap you fingers and everything is gone. You’re his darling, If you powerful- in his eyes you’re weak and need to be sheltered from the world.

So is all in favor to make you stop being a hero, might even be the type to frame you if it feels necessary. You might be able to convince him to be a sidekick for him or another hero WHO he also follows around. You’re not fighting pro level, help the people who have stolen bicycle or lost their cat in a tree.

Did someone say stealer? HIDE YOUR SHIT! Lost a item? Found your drawer half open and missing a shirt or other things? Shouji breaks into your room, even finds Deku, Shoto, and even bakugo and the girls in there sometimes. Doesn’t care, they snoop together. “This never happened.”

At first he was scared of frightening you, but slowly over time he warmed up to you. So much that you both became friends, or friendly acquaintances. MF would pat your head so much like you’re a pat. From getting a answer right, to eating all the food on your plate, headpat for his darling.

Holds you all the time in his little arm holder thing, like he kept Froppy in, or just wraps all his arms around you. You better hope you can tolerate him because he’s not letting go.

Might baby you a little but not to hard. Mostly pats on the head, candy for being good- wait, let him tie your shoes. Babying without degrading words. (Unlike Bakugo)

Does have shrine- or at least kinda. Just has a pile of your shit and hides it, then at night he smells the clothes and holds them close. No candles or anything. Probably has a photo shrine tho.

What would happen if they become dangerous? Or more crazy? Group or alone.

He’s not that dangerous, leaves violents mostly to the others and takes care of you. But alone he’s not doing much.

Would kidnap you. Alone or with a group. The only one on this list that would probably go with the group to take you away.

Alone, it’s nice because he just wanted to cuddle and protect you. Will chain you if you don’t behave and will keep you like that for life, so just be good! Buys you anything you want too. Food, clothes, games. Might let you out of the house but only in private areas.

Grouped, really just wants to be there for you and with you. So, he just stays near you, or watches you from the security cameras while you sleep.

Punishment alone- chained up like I said but not much more, unless no contact with you other then food. Leaves you alone in your room until you’re saying sorry.

Punishment grouped, same as alone. He’s okay with it unless they wanna hurt you, then he draws the line! No one should hurt his precious darling! Will be there with a comfortable hug no matter what happens!!

Is GS going to have physical merch? Will it be printed? Consider this a no, but I won't say never.

Does GS have a map, official wiki or dub or something like that? No. There's a fan wiki out there full of inaccurate information so take everything in there with tons of grains of salt. There's no map. The dub on YT is separate from me, I've had no hand in it.

Can I make a fan character? Can they interact with yours? You can absolutely make a fan character! I just ask you not to make them interact with mine, at least not in any kind of heavy way. It's a slippery slope and I've seen people treat my characters very rudely to make them suit their needs.

Can I make fanart/writing? Yes! All sfw and well-meaning works are welcome. Just tag me so I can see them! Why are the borders black and sometimes white? White borders means it's a flashback.

Deer don't do that!!!!! Or birds!! Or plants! The moon shouldn't be that shape right now. Everything in GS is fictional for this very reason. I shall not be shackled by the chains of realism when there's entire new worlds in my fingertips. I aim to make things believeable in its context, not realistic. Are other animals sentient, can they talk? Sure they are and can, but not outside their own species. A frog can't hold a conversation with a deer, but a deer and antelope could possibly make it work. There's exceptions though.

How old are main characters? They're fawns right? No they are not, they'd all be in their early 20s if they were humans.

What does sire mean? It keeps popping up in different contexts. You can liken this term to 'father', as in your dad but also something like a priest. The priest isn't your dad but "father forgive me for I've sinned". So sire is a) respected stag, b) very formal way to address your father. Dame is the female counterpart. Why are the does so small compared to stags.... are you a freak... do you just hate women..... Listen when I started GS I had been dwelling in a place where monster deer characters had insane size differences and it became some kind of norm to me and of course it found its way into my comic. Now I just have to keep drawing those tiny women to keep up the consistency. I've created bigger ladies nowadays because I too think it's a little silly now.

Please please will this character ever get a mate? Will this pairing be canon? Will you please make this pairing canon? I won't spoil any pairings, I think it'd be the most boring thing to do to my own work! I'll only confirm the ones already established in the comic.

Is this a speck of ember? Is it snow? What is that floating thing, is it relevant to the plot? IT'S JUST MY DUST BRUSH LEAVE ME ALONE.

What are some things to look for with accounts that post a lot about their pet pigeon? Like what can I look for to be sure the pigeon is being treated properly and not being abused/stressed for views? What are common questionable things you see accounts like those doing?

That is a REALLY good question, thanks for asking!

My take here probably won't be comprehensive, but I will at least try to give you a starting point to go off of.

Here are some red flags in pigeon social media content:

1. They have cross species content. A pigeon should not be interacting with any other species besides people on video. Nor in real life, honestly, but we're talking social media crimes. No other birds- not even ringnecks- and CERTAINLY no mammals. It's dangerous.

2. This can be a little tricky for the less experienced, but watching how someone interacts with their pigeon is key. Do they force interaction? Do they respect their bird? Is this light-hearted teasing that the bird doesn't mind, or are you looking at a freaked out animal? Or a freeze response? If you're not sure, ask around for opinions you trust on behavior. Sometimes it is the only way to make learning leaps.

3. Stupid decision making. You will probably know it when you see it. Bringing a pigeon outside with no harness. Talking about the freedom of birds and how they need to free fly outside. If it Seems like hawk bait, it probably is. (I don't mean that they do this on purpose, they don't. They are are in utter denial about deaths by hawk and their ability to prevent them by simply keeping their birds contained)

4. This one depends, but if you ever see content of a pigeon being held so that the general public can pet it without it being able to get away - usually a bad sign. I saw this connected to a very small rescue once and it was pretty appalling. These are touch adverse animals - you can't do that. And on that note-

5. Any form of advocating for 'struggle-cuddling', or holding the animal still until it stops fighting you, is a HUGE no. It is one of the fastest ways to learned helplessness, and also for some reason rampant advice in this fucking community. I'm bitter about it, obviously.

6. They shit on all breeding. It's not necessarily a sign of neglect but trust me, these are not people you want to be around.

Now, some GOOD things to look out for:

1. Excellent housing. You want to see a wider-than-tall space with a lot of solid perches not caked in 3 inches of gray-green cemented poop. Poop happens. They are birds. It gets dirty. But the cement is neglect. That took time.

2. They interact with their birds respectfully. Even if they might get a little silly with them, you won't see these birds getting squirrely and shying away. Consent does matter here.

3. They have primarily ethical breeds. The range of ethical is pretty wide here. But something like an extreme modena or extreme MOF (modern old frill, NOT the same as the classic old frill) might still show up in a regular loft, and that's okay. They need a home.

4. If they breed, they have some kind of plan. You might not even see it, but occasionally breeders will talk about what they want to do with their breeding project. And their plan shouldn't be fucking stupid. TRLs plan? Stupid. That isn't how breeding Works. So, someone with a brain in their head about this stuff.

5. Someone who is willing to euthanize an animal. Making a creature continue suffering through amputations or other surgeries that are too extreme for it... It isn't ethical. A pigeon can't survive long term with only one leg. We know this. Anyone who is trying to pretend differently is perpetuating suffering.

6. Someone who socializes any baby pigeons properly. That means no hand-raising, no people imprinting. Parent raising. Socialization techniques vary and most are valid.

7. Care more about the bird than the content they make. The bird shouldn't be a toy they force into situations for views.

Generally, just try to pay attention. Don't be afraid to ask someone you trust about what they think of an account. It can be hard to break out of the little echo chambers that start to form, but thinking critically about stuff like that will absolutely help you in the long term. Exposing yourself to better information and cutting off the bad stuff will advance you a lot farther.

A real quick body language lesson for you, on how to tell if a pigeon is comfortable.

A pigeon frozen in place, refusing to move, is not a happy pigeon. Their eyes may get wide and tight, their posture may be slightly tucked in and hunched. It can be easy to mistake them as a little sleepy if you don't know what to look for.

Sleepy don't look like that. Sleepy is loose posture, puffy feathers, squinty eyes, fluffy forehead, raised foot. Some or all of these.

Another sign of discomfort is more active defense. It might look like display dancing, but this bird is telling you to fuck off. They tend to dance and hop around more trying to avoid you, their necks will be stretched out really tall, their heads will dart around, they will interrupt themselves mid-coo to run away.

These are birds who are confident enough to tell you to go away, but still freaked out. I saw a video from a prominent rescue last week of such behavior where someone was "playing" with this poor guy who was totally boxed into his rescue crate with nowhere to go.

Pigeons need an exit route during intense interactions with us. You can't box them into a corner so they have nowhere to go.

A pigeon that WANTS to wrestle or what have you will not flinch away from you like this, or freeze like a rabbit. If you are wrestling and you pull your hand away, the pigeon should run up to your hand again if you offer it from a distance. If you are petting the pigeon, the pigeon should lean their head down, or groan, or nesty grunt, or puff their feathers up, or try to preen you!

Creepy Conclusions

Summary: After breakfast, Wild brings up the issue with the slate and shows it to Danny. He seems just as freaked out as they are, but is it really for the same reason?

Also, they go shopping and start training.

“That’s… really creepy.” Danny said.

He looked up from the Slate and towards Wild.”And this doesn’t happen often?” He asked. He sounded just as unsettled as they’d been earlier that morning, which Twilight guessed was fair. He’d be freaked out to see himself like that, too.

Wild shook his head and pointed at Danny.

“It only happened with me?” Danny asked, probably just to be sure he was understanding correctly.

Wild nodded. Danny looked back at the picture of himself.

After breakfast, Twilight and Wild decided to show Danny the picture just before hitting the road to see if he knew anything about it. Time had mentioned that he saw Danny with something similar to Wild’s slate, but it looked smoother and was much smaller. Since they both make true-to-life images, Wild wondered if Danny would have any guesses.

After a while, though, Danny just shrugged.“Best I can come up with is a malfunction in the technology. My friends and I sometimes take pictures and they’ll come out a little off because of the light or some kind of malfunction, but to be honest, this one is the freakiest and most messed up one I’ve seen.” He said, pointing at the picture.

That wasn’t very comforting. Technology wasn’t exactly Wild’s strong suit. He knew how to handle the slate and what it does, but he didn’t understand how it worked. He didn’t even know which part was magic and which part was technology!

Since Danny was from a world likely advanced in technology, given that he has a slate despite being from a world is such little magic, perhaps Wild could lend it to him and ask him to look at it closer? If he could do that? Wild already tried everything he knew, but surely Danny could do something if he lended it to him.

“Wait, what about that theory?” Twilight spoke up.

Danny turned to him.“What theory?” He asked.

“A friend of mine, Shane, told me about this thing that happens between animals and monsters from different magical areas. The theory is that if too much magic can negatively affect creatures who’ve lived in areas with less magic, can a creature with less magic negatively impact things with more magic?” Twilight explained.

Wild doubted this explanation. The only thing that messes with magic he’s seen is other magic. Light and dark magic combat each other, thus they can make the other “malfunction”. He wasn’t sure what kind of magic his slate used, though, and Danny didn’t seem to be made of or use either of these magics.

“That’s how magic works?” Danny asked.

“Not really.” Legend spoke up. The three of them turned to look at Legend.”Magic can affect those less used to it, like leaving a mark or something permanent that symbolizes however it affected someone, but there’s no evidence on how the opposite can happen, so this might be a technology issue like Danny said.” He explained.

“Sooo, let’s just settle for a malfunction in the technology?” Danny suggested.

“Seeing as there’s no other explanation, sure.” Twilight said.

Danny nodded and turned around to get back to what he was doing before Wild and Twilight called him over. He knelt down next to his backpack and opened it to fish out a small metal can. It made a hissing sound and popped open. If it wasn’t for the birds screaming their heads off, Wild thought it would’ve been a pretty loud sound.

He redirected his attention back to packing up as Danny took a few sips of the drink, and the following conversation became something more of in the back of his mind, but not completely ignored. Months living by himself in the wilderness had given Wild the habit of paying attention to multiple things at once.

“How’s the injury?” Hyrule piped up.

”All good, thanks for asking! I’m ready to start whatever training you guys need to give me pretty much whenever.” Danny replied.

This was good news. The sooner they could teach him to handle himself in a fight, the better.

“We should get started soon, then.” Warriors said.

“Shouldn’t we also be looking for the shadow thing?” Wind asked.

Oh, right. Wild had completely forgotten about that thing for that morning.

If they had to keep moving to look for that black lizalfos, how were they supposed to also train Danny? Were they going to take more breaks to train him? They needed to get to that thing quickly, though. He finished packing up quickly and looked to the others.

They had just about finished and many of them were standing up, ready to leave. The only ones who weren’t were Sky and Wind, who were both looking around for answers. Danny likely had just finished the drink since he put it back in his bag.

“What if we just did it when we stopped for breaks?” Danny suggested.

“The point of a break is to take a break.” Sky said.

“Then we could try doing it before we head out every morning and then again in the evening.” Danny said.

Everyone was quiet for a moment. Warriors, who unsurprisingly looked like he was taking Danny’s suggestion serious more than anyone, gave a little nod.”I think it’s a good idea.” He said. He looked over at Time as if asking for permission. Wild was sure that Warriors would try to be the first to start training Danny, and probably be very strict about it. It wouldn’t be a bad thing, but he’d probably give the kid the most intense training sessions between them all.

”We’ll take turns between training him each session.” Time said.”And to avoid arguments, no one watching will jump in and try to say something.“ He added.

“Nice, so should we go ahead and start now, or later?” Danny asked.

Wild noticed Sky and Legend glance at each other.“You seem eager.” Four said.

Danny smiled and put a hand over his chest.“Thank you, I’ve always been passionate about not dying.” He said. He lowered his bag and set it down on the ground.

Wind laughed at his joke. Twilight raised a hand briefly.”I’ll go first.” He volunteered.

Wolf noticed Warriors’ face turn a little sour. If Wild was a mind reader, he’d sure he’d hear a bitter “Damn it” from the captain. Danny’s face lit up a bit, almost like he was relieved, and he drew out the sword given to him on his first day.

Wild walked a few steps back, just to be sure he was giving them space, and sat next to some of the others who took their seats to watch.

He grabbed the shield as well, and shifted his stance so he’d be quicker to move or hold his ground. Surprisingly, he was holding it correctly. Something told Wild that many people hold it wrong on the first try and it takes them a while to correct themselves, but Danny made it look like he knew what he was doing. Twilight did the same, and without further warning, he charged at Danny.

In a split second, the teen tensed up and narrowed his eyes. His grip tightened around the sword, but he didn’t move from his spot as Twilight closed the distance between them. Twilight swung his sword in an outward swipe, but Danny ducked and leapt to the side to get behind him.

He landed wrong because he realized midway that he was still holding the shield and sword, but he still moved quick enough to get back up before Twilight could turn around. Danny swung his sword in an outward motion and Twilight jumped back as soon as he saw it coming. When the ranch hand stepped closer and made an attempt to swing back, Danny brought his shield up to block it.

He stumbled a little when Twilight cut it, the sword making a clang against the metal, but retaliated by moving the shield and shooting his sword forward quickly enough to touch Twilight’s midsection. The ranch hand froze and looked down upon noticing the contact. It didn’t break or tear any of his clothing, but it was definitely enough for Twilight to notice.

The ranch hand looked up from the sword and smiled at Danny.”That’s was fast.” He said.

Danny dropped the serious expression and smiled.”Thank you.” He said. He pulled the sword away and looked at the sword and shield.”How are you supposed to roll with these things, though?“ He asked.

“Here, you roll like this.” Twilight said. Danny stepped to the side to give him room and Twilight dropped down into a roll. He adjusted his grip to hold his sword sideways so he wouldn’t risk cutting himself.

Danny copied Twilight. Or at least, he tried. The first attempt didn’t go well since he dropped his sword. Once he got back up, he grabbed the sword and tried again. And again. Twilight showed him how to do it again, and Danny paid closer attention to what he did with his sword. When he tried again, he got it right. He stood up, nodded to himself, and tried a few more times just to be sure he got it.

After that, he brushed dirt off of himself.“Okay. I’m ready to try again.” He said.

“Alright. This time, I want you to come to me.” Twilight said.

Danny did as he was asked and sprinted towards the ranch hand. Wild turned his head to look at the others and tapped the person closest to him, who happened to be Legend. The veteran turned to him and Wild began signing.

‘That was good for a first try.’

Legend nodded in agreement.”Yeah. Either he’s a natural, or he’s actually done this before. I think it’s the first one. You saw how he screwed up when he tried to roll? He looked so confused for a second.” He said.

Wild nodded.‘He’s learning well.’

Wind sat down opposite side of Wild.“You think we’ll eventually have two people spar him at once, or do you think we’ll find the portal to his world before that?” He asked.

Wild thought about it. It all depends on how quickly they find the next portal, and how long it’ll take to find the right one. It could be the next portal, or maybe the tenth, who knows? It could take days or weeks, maybe even a month or more! They’d probably be teaching him how to deal with two opponents at once before they find his world.

‘Teach him how to fight two monsters.’ Wild signed.

“Agreed.” Legend said.

“Yeah, I think so too.” Wind said.”I don’t want to get his hopes down.” He added.

“Woah!!” Danny exclaimed, drawing their attention back to the sparring match. He was now on the ground with Twilight pointing his sword at his neck above him. Twilight pulled his sword away and reached a hand out to help him up, which Danny gladly accepted. Once he was up, he grinned.”Going again?” He asked.

“Three more rounds, and then we’ll get going.” Twilight agreed.

Wild noticed Sky, who was across from him, pull out a small knife and an unfinished carving from his bag. The cook smiled a little, wondering what he was making this time.

~~~~~(After Training)~~~~~

By the time they were done, both Danny and Twilight seemed a little tired as they tried to catch their breath. The sparring didn’t take too much time, but it’d been fun to watch. Danny picked up on it surprisingly quickly and was dodging and evading attacks pretty well by the fourth round. The fifth round was the longest, and ended when Danny had managed to trick Twilight into striking a tree and getting his sword stuck, then get behind him and hold the sword above his shoulder.

They got the sword out, and Danny took a few tries to properly put his sword and shield back. He went to grab his backpack when Warriors and Sky approached him.

“Not bad.” Warriors said simply. Some wouldn’t think it was much of a compliment, but coming from a captain during a war to someone who just started learning, it seemed pretty nice to Wild.

“Are you sure you haven’t done this before? You handled yourself pretty well!” Sky asked.

Danny smiled and nodded.”Thank you.” He said.”I’m sure the only experience I have in combat is avoiding being the target of some really angry classmate of mine. Fights sometimes break out in my school, and if you don’t want to end up being a meat punching bag, you need to learn how to get away.” He added.

Sky and Warriors glanced at each other. Sky remembered when Groose was a bully, but he didn’t recall Groose actually attacking anyone. He made empty threats and kidnapped his Loftwing, sure, but he couldn’t remember an incident where Groose, or anyone for that matter, attacked another person.“You’ve been attacked by classmates?” Sky asked.

Danny shrugged and picked his bag up, reaching for the side pocket with a water bottle.”More or less.” He said casually. He opened the water bottle and sipped some of it, then put it back.“I don’t usually end up getting hurt since people obviously get in trouble for it, and the few times I have gotten hurt were just a couple bruises that went away in a few days.” He said. The way he talked about it made it sound like a normal thing, and it shouldn’t be.

“Why don’t you fight back?” Warriors asked.

Danny’s eyebrows furrowed and his eyes narrowed for a moment.“If I could without getting in more trouble than the person who initiated the fight, then I would, but the school system’s a mess.” He said. He sounded pretty irritated by the question, like it was that one obvious question everyone asked all the time with an equally, if not more obvious, answer.

“Anyways, are we heading out?” He asked. Danny was about to sling his bag over his shoulders, probably out of habit, but it hit the sword and shield and he quickly took it off. He settled on carrying it with his hand.

“Yes. We’ll be stopping by a store to grab you a bedroll.” Time chimed in.

“One problem.” Danny said.

Warriors turned to him.”And what’s that?” He asked.

“I’m broke.” Danny said.”I packed for a sleepover, not shopping. I pretty much have nothing, so it might be a waste of time trying to get me a blanket I can’t even pay for. Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion that we have different currencies.” He said.

“One of us will pay for it then.” Time said as he began walking, probably not wanting to wait any longer. The rest of the group started following quickly, but Danny seemed hesitant would what Time said.

“Are you sure? ” He asked. He didn’t seem like he wanted to cause trouble for them, but buying a simple bedroll wouldn’t put a dent in their finances.

Sky nodded.”Yeah, we all have wallets that hold three hundred rupees or more. A bedroll only costs anywhere between five and twenty, so no one needs to worry.” He said.

“Now come on, let’s not keep the others waiting.” Warriors said.

Danny smiled and started walking after the rest of the group.”Thank you. I appreciate it.” He said.

~~~~~(Three Hours Later)~~~~~

By the time the group found the village, Sky was up for taking a break, but he also wasn’t. It was one of those times where he was tired, but willing to go on without complaint a while longer. Not too long after they entered the village, the group started getting weird looks. Well, it was less them, and more Danny.

Sky never really understood why the difference between humans and hylians was so important in other worlds. Humans were pretty much round eared hylians, weren’t they? The rest of the group would agree with him that it was ridiculous to see someone refused service or given weird looks because they were one or the other.

Sky was hoping Danny wouldn’t notice the stares, but unfortunately, he did. He seemed to notice them pretty quickly and was growing uncomfortable. Sky noticed he tried keeping his gaze to the ground or focus on someone ahead of him, but he kept glancing around as if they were going to attack. Finally, he turned to Four.”Hey, did I do something? Why are people staring?” He asked.

“I guess they haven’t seen a human before?” Four guessed.

As they grew closer to the store, some of the group stopped outside, including Four. Danny paused at the entrance to keep talking. Danny raised an eyebrow as he walked inside the building.“What difference does that make? It just means my ears are a little different, right?” He asked.

Sky tapped his shoulder to get him to keep walking. It was rude to hold up the walkway.“To be honest, we don’t get it either. Some people are just ridiculous about it, I guess.” Four said. Sky went inside with Danny, Time, and Legend. The store wasn’t very big, but it wasn’t small either. Quickly, Sky spotted quivers of arrows, potions, and other items that would be bought by the locals and travelers, including some bedrolls on the other side of the store.

Legend picked one of them off the shelves and Time grabbed a blue potion and red potion. Legend walked to the counter with the shopkeeper standing and waving at him. The two began exchanging greetings and talking, but Sky ignored it and looked at the nice wooden carvings next to him. There were wolves, bokoblins, goats, mushrooms, but his favorite were definitely the birds.

The tiny birds down here were adorable! Sky often wished he could hold one in his hand or carry a bunch around in his arms. When Twilight called down a hawk using a blade of some weird looking grass, Sky gasped and wanted to hug the beautiful creature so badly! Alas, the bird only let him pet him, but he still had a lot of fun doing that and noticed a gratitude stone above his head once he was done.

Sky practically begged Twilight to teach him how to do the same, and the ranch hand happily obliged. First, he was given a gauntlet to protect his arm since hawk talons were very sharp. Then he struggled with the plant for what felt like hours, but it paid off seeing a hawk come down and land on his arm. Sky was speechless and couldn’t even compliment the bird’s beauty until it was already gone.

One day, he was going to make a perfect mini wooden sculpture of a hawk. He just had to keep practicing.

“Hey, Danny, do you like birds?” The words left Sky’s mouth before he even realized it.

Danny was still next to him, thankfully.”Yeah, they’re pretty cool. One of my best friends loves all kinds of animals and tells me a lot about them, including birds. I like crows and ravens the most, they’re pretty smart!” He replied.

Sky turned away from the carvings and looked at Danny. From what he’s heard from the others, crows and ravens are birds with dark feathers and are typically rude since they always start to swarm them as soon as they see them.“Really?” He asked.

“Well, compared to most animals, yeah. They tend to recognize people’s faces and mimic them, so sometimes when I go to where I usually find them, they’ll say “hi” or “how are you”?“ Danny replied.

Sky’s eyes widened. Screw the others’ warnings, he wanted to meet them immediately.

“Where can I find them?” Sky asked with a hint of urgency. Danny snickered at his excitement, but before he could answer, Legend called him over.

“Danny!” He called out.

“Be right back.” Danny said to Sky, then walked over to Legend. Legend gave him the bedroll and Danny thanked him. Time had walked over and was paying for his potions, so Danny and Legend walked over to Sky, ready to leave.

“Dude, these are much softer than I expected.” Danny said, holding the bedroll. He was flexing his fingers over the fabric and then scrunching them up in a slow motion that oddly reminded Sky of a cat.

“Glad you like it.” Sky said.”So, about the crows?” He questioned.

“Oh, right! Crows and ravens will tell others if you’re nice or not, so don’t be like Dash and be nice.” Danny said. He dropped his voice and looked out into a distance that wasn’t there.”He threw a rock at one and was chased by every single crow in the area every time they saw him for weeks. Those birds hold grudges.” He said.

“Come on, let’s not hold the entrance.” Legend said.

He went outside and Danny and Sky followed. A minute later, Time joined them.

“Alright, let’s head out.” Time said.

~~~~~(Four Hours Later)~~~~~

So far, everything was going better than expected. Wild’s world was typically full of fights with monsters, but they hadn’t encountered anything so far. Honestly, it was a bit unnerving, but Four wanted to appreciate what peace they had before the fight that was sure to come.

Twilight and Wild both led the way, with Wild’s knowledge of the landscape and Twilight’s ability to pick up on the lizalfos’ trail. He’d gone off and changed to wolf form again, and Danny seemed hesitant to continue without the ranch hand not knowing he was right there, but they reassured him that Wolfie would find him again like always.

Time and Warriors were in the back, leaving Four, Legend, Wind, Hyrule, and Danny in the middle. Danny had tucked the bedroll into his bag, which seemed rather full now as he carried it in his hands. The walk had been mostly quiet, with the exception of the local wildlife. Something Four couldn’t help but notice was that Danny seemed much calmer than yesterday, and he was finally looking around more.

The other day, he’d been mostly staring off into the distance. Especially during lunch, he didn’t seem all there. Probably realizing the likelihood of returning home wasn’t as high as he thought.

Now, though, he was looking around more. Occasionally, he’d stare at something until he passed it, and Four recognized some of them as mushrooms or other plants that had magic in them that can causes various things to happen when consumed. If magic is so rare as to be considered nonexistent to most of Danny’s world, then he’d probably never seen them.

It was nice to see him more curious about his surroundings.

Suddenly, Wild stopped and raised a hand. The whole group stopped as soon as they saw the signal. Wild pointed ahead of them and move a branch for them to get a better look. Four, thanks to his cursed height, had to move to the front to see what was going on.

Danny opened his mouth, probably to argue, but Legend spoke up.”I second that.” He agreed.

Warriors began walking towards the front and reached back for his sword.”Third. You just started learning.” He said. Danny didn’t look happy, but he nodded.

“Alright, you’re the experts.” He said with a hint of reluctance.

“Do you need everyone’s help?” Legend asked.

“No, there’s not too many. We’d probably only need two or three people.” Warriors said. Twilight took a few steps forward, showing that he was volunteering. Wild reached for his sword and drew it out.”We’ll be right back.” Warriors said. Then, they burst out of the shadows of the trees and into the clearing.

Four soon heard the bokoblins growling and calling out for others, but he ignored it and looked back to Danny. Wind smiled and patted him on the back.”Don’t worry, you’ll get there soon.” He said, holding back a laugh.

“I hope so. Feeling helpless is the worst.” Danny said dramatically. Wind laughed at the half joke.”Maybe after a day or two, I’ll be able to help?” He asked.

“That depends on how well you do.” Time spoke up. Danny turned around to look at him.”And some fights might still be too much for a beginner. I get that you want to help, but you shouldn’t overestimate yourself or get too confident. We’ll see how you do.” Time said.

“I wish I could argue with that.” Danny said.

“All clear!” Warriors called out. Four moved a branch and looked outside. The field was pretty small compared to most Four had seen, and the watch towers the bokoblins had built were coming down. The last few bokoblins exploded and the red smoke disappeared. However, he noticed that there was something black on Warriors’ and Wild’s swords.

Four stepped outside and did a short sprint towards Warriors, who was closer.“Black blood?” He asked, just to confirm incase he didn’t see it correctly.

“Yeah. Wolfie did some distracting and was careful not to bite. We still don’t know if it’s poisonous or not.” Warriors said. Wolfie appeared from behind a downed boar and walked up to them, followed by Wild, who was likely harvesting some meat. Four heard the others coming up from behind and turned around.

“So we’re on the right track.” Legend said. Danny looked at the black blood on the sword. He didn’t look too surprised, which Four found odd, but he brushed it off. Given how much his world has turned upside down, this probably wasn’t the craziest thing these past few days. Wild pulled up the slate and poked it a few times before turning it around to show an image of a meal.

“Yeah, I’d be up for lunch.” Legend said.

“Me too!” Wind chimed in.

Wolfie barked, and Warriors reached into his bag to pull out a small cloth and begin cleaning his sword.”I could eat.” He said.

“Would be a shame to waste this fire the bokoblins have set up. We’ll stop for lunch and continue.” Time said.

The group began walking towards the fire and Wild looked at Danny in silent question, but he shook his head.”Thanks, but I’m not hungry.” He said.

“You may not feel hungry right now, but you will later. Eat something.” Hyrule said.

Danny looked like he wanted to argue, but he kept his mouth shut and followed them them while Wild began working on the food.

Tucker cupped his hands in front of his mouth and exhaled into them. For a split second, he could feel warmth through the cold and rubbed his gloved hands together.”We really need to make better suits.” He said.

Sam continued walking, following what she thought to be footsteps of one of the ghost yetis of the Far Frozen. The snow was very deep, and every step felt like an exhausting task, but they had no choice. Their ship would only carry them so far into the cold before it had to stop or it’d freeze up when left alone.”You’re telling me. I’m wearing three layers, and I’m still cold.” She said.

“Three?! I’m wearing four! Maybe that’s why you’re so cold!” Tucker exclaimed.

Sam paused and turned around.”Four layers? How are you still moving?” She asked. Three layers felt irritatingly restricting enough, four sounded like a nightmare.

“With how cold it is, I probably won’t be for much longer.” Tucker said.

Sam rolled her eyes. Tucker could always just turn around and go warm up in the ship if he wanted, she wasn’t going to stop him. Just ask that he use the communicators they have to call her so she knew he got there safe. Sam looked at the tracks. She really hoped that they brought them to the village. It was starting to snow, and the weather forecast didn’t exactly cover the Ghost Zone, so who knew if it was the beginning of a blizzard or not?

She looked up ahead and squinted her eyes to try to see farther. She and Tucker heard from Danny that the Far Frozen had forests, but he hasn’t mentioned how surprisingly dense the place was with the dead looking foliage combined with literal tons of snow decorating the area. The tracks led forward and took a left turn around a bunch of fallen trees.

Sam put her hands up, pulled the snow mask covering her mouth and nose, and cupped her hands next to her freezing mouth.”HELLO?” She called out. Her voice echoed through the area. There was no response, but already, the cold was starting to make her face feel even worse, so she pulled the mask that was slightly damp from her breath back on.

“Sam!” Tucker scolded. He made a short sprint through the snow and stopped next to her.”We don’t know what else is out here!” He said.

“We’ll be alright. Even if something comes after us, we’re not helpless. We brought weapons, remember?” Sam said.

A deep, low growl interrupted them. Both froze and looked to where it seemed to have come from. It came from the left, around the fallen trees, where the footsteps were leading.

For a moment, everything seemed quiet. Even the wind, which had made continuous noise the whole time they’d been there, fell silent. Sam and Tucker would be lying if they said it wasn’t unsettling. Sam was the first to move, taking a slow step forward.”IS SOMEONE THERE?” She called out.

“No. It was the wind.” Tucker said sarcastically.

Another low growl stopped whatever banter they would’ve had dead in its tracks. This time, it was followed by a heavy thud. Then another. And another. It was repetitive, like footsteps. Sam reached for the ghost gun and was quick to aim it in the direction of the thudding as it grew louder and closer. Tucker grabbed his own weapon and held it at the ready.

One of the thuds was combined with a crash or a crunch. It sounded like wood being crushed under something heavy. The two moved a little closer together. The next time they heard this combination of sounds, Tucker saw an old log on the forest floor being crushed by what looked like a leg, but it had the same coloration as the trees.

“There!!” He called out, aiming his gun at the leg and firing at it. There was a howl of pain, and a distant boulder turned to look at him.

No, it wasn’t a boulder. Boulders don’t have blank white eyes, or necks, and they weren’t shaped like the skull of a cat. This was the head of something, and whatever it was, it was angry now. The leg that was shot now had a large, gaping hole that was leaking ectoplasm. The creature looked at the injury, then back at the two humans.

“I think I made a mistake.” Tucker said nervously.

“You think?!” Sam scolded.

The creature roared and began charging at them. Tucker fired another shot aimed for its face while Sam aimed for one of its other three legs. Sam missed, and Tucker barely grazed the tip of the skull. Sam’s second shot hit its target, and the ghost stumbled, but it righted itself quickly and kept going.

It closed the distance between them before the pair realized it and used one of its front legs to pin them both down on the ground. They sunk a few feet into the snow and their vision was limited by the snow around them, forcing them to focus on the ghost monster as it lowered its head and growled.

“Ugh, dude, breath mint!” Sam said. She hadn’t actually meant to say it out loud, but she wasn’t wrong. Its breath reeked of death.

The ghost growled louder and raised its head. It opened its maw, revealing a second of teeth hidden in the mouth. It slowly lowered its head towards them. Sam and Tucker both tried moving around, but with tightly packed snow around them and a heavy leg that felt like it was crushing their ribcage above them, they couldn’t move much.

“Let us go!!” Tucker demanded.

Suddenly, the ghost cried out in pain. It lifted the leg that was holding them down as it turned to see whatever had hurt it. With the weight gone, Sam and Tucker scrambled to get up and try to get out. The ghost howled again and turned around. In the blink of an eye, it was gone.

“Oh, thank God.” Tucker said.

“Yeah.” Sam panted.”Let’s get out of here.” She said. She looked at the snow around her. It was almost as tall as she was, she could just barely poke her head above the snow.

“Need some help?”

Both humans turned at the sound, except this time, they weren’t scared to hear it. They were relieved. More than relieved, really!

Frostbite dug his large paw into the snow and let them use it as a sort of stairway or ladder for them to climb out without struggling through the snow.“Frostbite! We’ve been looking for you!” Sam exclaimed.

Frostbite smiled.”You have? Well, I’m hear now after I heard you shouting, so how can I help you?” He asked.

“It’s about Danny.” Sam said. She glanced over at Tucker and noticed he was shivering more than she was.”And we were also about to start looking for shelter. Does your village have room for two more for a bit?” She asked.

Frostbite nodded.”Of course it does! Follow me, we just finished making extra blankets.” He said.

hi! can you talk more about the significance of the biological concept of species? I'm a nonhuman who currently believes that species can't exactly be interpreted the way gender is, but I lack the vocabulary and knowledge in ecology to properly communicate that lol, so I thought I would ask you as an alterhuman in science! no worries if you don't feel like answering this ask :3

ooh i can definitely talk about that, yeah!! i was meaning to make a post like this since forever, so thanks for giving me the excuse!

so, i want to begin by emphasizing that species identity is a very real concept that should be always respected. of course, im an otherkin myself, so i dont think anyone ever doubted it in the first place, but i wanted to make myself clear anyways. species-diverse folks are the species they say they are, regardless of ones own beliefs. if a dog therian says theyre a dog physically, i believe them. if someone who looks like a human to me insists theyre not human at all, i believe them. if someone tells me, an atheist, that theyre a god or an angel, i believe them. and if someone says they can transform into a unicorn-dragon-zombie with robot wings through fucking magic, i believe them. so, now that that is clear, lets begin.

traditionally, species were classified based on their morphological characteristics, that is, their physical appearance. while this method was effective at first, it quickly became too unreliable (as evidenced by the many bird species that look almost the same, and dog breeds that, despite their physical differences, belong to the same species), so scientists began categorizing species based on their reproductive compatibility, specifically whether they could interbreed and whether their offspring were fertile. so, for example, iguanas and monitor lizards are incapable of interbreeding (different species), whereas donkeys and horses can produce mules, which are sterile (different species, same genus). finally, dogs and wolves can interbreed and they produce fertile offspring (same species, Canis lupus). nowadays, we classify species via phylogenetic analysis, which looks for similarities in DNA chains, though this method also presents its own problems as described by @nisaetus-nerd in this post.

now, why is species identity different from gender identity? well, for starters, species is more akin to biological sex than to gender. aside from the fact that the majority of the population takes species identity to be some kind of hilarious joke, species, just like sex, has some physical characteristics that (for now at least) cannot be changed. the category that we know as sex is actually a combination of chromosomes, reproductive organs (internal and external), external characteristics, hormones, (not relevant to humans but) pheromones, and reproductive cycles; similarily, species is a combination of many things, including DNA, physiology, morphology, diet, ecology, and behavior, among others.

its also important to point out that within the different sexes that exist in the human species there arent that many variations from one another; humans dont actually have a ton of sexual dimorphism (at least compared to freaks of nature (affectionate) like birds of paradise) and many of the differences between sexes that society highlights don't actually exist (think "female brain vs. male brain"). sex, at least in my opinion, isnt that important outside of reproductive health, so not many problems arise from simply throwing it out the window.

meanwhile, we do use species for a lot of things! as a vet in training, this is especially important when treating different animals; you wouldnt use the same drugs for a dog as you would for a horse, nor would you give the same food to a cow as you would to a pig. species are too different from each other, especially the further down the phylogenetic tree you go. you can actually use similar drugs for a dog and a human being, because we evolved together and have a similar physiology, but the same cant be said about chickens. most mammals heal their bones in a similar way (only difference i can think of, aside from the drugs, is the fact that you have to protect the bandages so they dont rip them off), but when it comes to, say, a bird of prey, thats an entirely different story. not to mention bees! they dont even have bones!!

(species have other uses outside of health of course, thats only what i specialize in. someone who studies ecology, or zoology, or genetic engineering, or any other field of biology would give you a different answer than mine. this is only my point of view, which i admit is kind of limited)

so! to wrap up this extremely long post, i want to stress once more that we need a term to express the experience of species identity, similar to how gender is discussed in transgender communities. species identity is not the same as biological species, and its crucial to be able to freely describe this experience with our own vocabulary. the way things are, biological species is too important of a concept to dismiss its meaning entirely, which is why we often face ridicule and skepticism when discussing it outside of alterhuman circles. the way we define "species" in our community (in which species = identity) is quite different from how most people usually understand the term (in which species = biology), and i think this misunderstanding is in part what leads to doubt when we talk about our experiences with others. so by changing the way we talk about species identity, we could get more people to understand what we really mean, instead on assuming based on the words we use.

To me, hell hounds are a lot like normal demons like sebastian except they have more dog like tendencies but don’t act completely like a dog (Like Pluto)  They act more human/demon like but have powers, and talents that dogs have, like see in the dark, keen sense of smell, loves bones etc. Also It would be cute if the s/o has a tail or dog ears like how neko’s do. That would be a nice difference from normal demons. 

-anyways, I think Gregory would find a Hell hound! s/o quite entertaining. 

-Before he finds out that his s/o was a hell hound he would just think you are very eccentric with your dog-like tendencies. I mean he just thinks ‘well, you are in the Violet house so you are automatically eccentric, nothing to it’.

-Especially since all you wear is a cute hat and some kind of long coat to hide your tail. 

-He isn’t one to judge especially once he starts to fall for you. 

-Does get caught off guard once your dog-like quirks show up. Like becoming hyper, getting distracted by small animals like birds or squirrels and growling a lot when you are mad.

What do they notice first in a person? What they look at to avoid looking at her. If they actually look at her, head on, they are worth considering.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is their pain tolerance? About a 6. She's not as tough as she claims she is, and in a straight up fight, she's something of a glass cannon. After the initial ambush/environmental hazard phase, the Penny boss fight doesn't actually take too long.

Do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure? (or freeze and fawn) Fawn, and she hates it about herself. Freeze if she's merely discombobulated.

What animal represents them best? Monitor lizard. I saw a video of one acting like an oversized housecat that didn't blink and yep, that's her.

How would a stranger likely describe them? "So I had this bird in the cab the other week, right, and she just sat there for the whole ride - just stared. Didn't say a word. Didn't blink. Funny thing is, I don't remember her getting in... or what she looked like. Just those eyes. And she paid cash. Wouldn't even touch me card reader."

Do they have any hobbies? What a quaint notion. Not... really. Everything Penny does is technically part of her Sabbat hustle. Being a troll on vampblr.sck is fun, though. I imagine she still reads, and she can do a cryptic crossword in about half the time it takes anyone else, but that's more about keeping her brain active... it's like exercise. I'm now struck by the awful image of her working out, just to freak out the gym rats, and I can't get that out of my head...

ok hi im writing down what my ideas were for splatoon au . there is literally almost zero substance and nothing bad is happening in it they just exist here and have fun bcus i said so

mario is ur standard inkling . im not too well versed in weapons so i did not think about his much if at all because the only one i can recall by name is the stinger and thats because im a bow freak. anyway hes just chilling

goombella is a jellyfish . yeah i know theyr supposed to be pretty quiet and not very bright but shes special. to me . she would be friends with sheldon but in a frenemies way . definitely follows mario around because not many can handle how much she talks and also bcus mario just enjoys having a living descriptor for literally everything thats happening

koops is a sea turtle! i could not find anything referencing to sea turtles anywhere unfortunately but they do mention regular turtles at some point in splat2 so. im grabbing that and running. he probably helps manage a shop somewhere with his father

kid yoshi is. a pufferfish . im not 100% since in my head its hard to compare yoshis to any sea animal but i went with this for now. ur average little yapper that follows mario around like a duckling

flurrie is a sea slug! i knew this would be the case immediately bcus like. it works so well . i couldn't Not do this. she runs a fashion boutique as a side thing to her whole "famous actor" thing. vivian helps out at this boutique!

vivian is an octarian, of some kind! specifically of which i dont know! my vague splatoon memory has made me pull up a wiki 50000 times and i am still throwing things against a wall . so apologies there . i love making shit up. anyway .

bobbery is also an octarian, but in a more 'octavio' fashion. hes very fascinated by the ocean and will probably buy seashells and other things off of you. also an avid fan of ink bombs! dont test him he is old and unafraid.

ms. mowz iss a leucistic frigatebird ! gulls are a thing and frigatebirds are kinda related to them being seabirds; they also have a tendency to steal catches from other birds, so i was like. yeah this is perfect. her ribbons are strips of paper from newspapers shes stolen! instead of badges she steals pretty much anything shiny, any currency, and weapon parts. shes very useful if you befriend her!

This is gonna be long and prob uninteresting so feel free to skip but I saw that you wrote that you didn't think of species when drawing bats for your au and that we're free to interpret them how we want and though Large flying fox wouldn't match what you've drawn super well (outside of colour) cause they've got small ears and are raven sized(up to around 1kg in weight and 1.5 meter wing span), it'd mean that Cass could very easily hitch a ride as long as she's a normal sized bat(like a black myotis, though all vesper bats are prob too small so a species of leaf nosed bat might fit better but she doesnt have a leaf nose).

Also Cass having small eyes but being able to echolocate while Bruce has big ol eyes and can't would be a fun parallel to Cass's mask not having visible eyes and her whole 'body language as a native language' thing(like... both being an extra sense kinda deal).

I really hope this isn't a bother i just love bats and will use any excuse i can get to word vomit about them, they are such an awesome group of animals(they make up a fifth of all discovered mammal species(1300) and the smallest have a weight that's like 1/400th that of the biggest! Not to mention the variation in noses and ears!) and your au is very cute(Not to mention all the other awesome art)!

Most bat species are fucked up little freaks and i love them all, they might be part of what got me into batman ngl 👉👈. I'd def recommend looking through bat species just for the hell of it cause they really are awesome, theres some real cute and bizzare ones out there. I've personally used dif species as inspiration for dif batman designs.

Ghostbats are ugly-cute little gremlins! I’ve come across so many pictures of them while looking up ghostbat (the ship) related things!

I do find a lot of bats to be strange and funny looking but cute in their own way :3 I just don’t have enough bat knowledge to decide which species of bat first best for each Bat family member lol. But plenty of people seem to have better ideas than i do!

These are all interesting, Anon! And the differences between Cass and Bruce would make for some super interesting and cute connections between the two of them.

(I did go back and do some research to find the photos i used as references when i first started sketching the AU and i believe i used pictures of fruit bats, which may be why i colored them brown!!)

and speaking of ghostbat…maybe Khoa needs to make an appearance or two in this AU…and i have a pretty good idea of how to do that :3

Hi! I really like your furry aus! They really inspired me to branch out species in my own. I was wondering how you chose such a wide array— I’ve noticed a bias towards mammals in my own, with birds following close behind. Do you have any tips on collecting species & looking for furry symbolism? Thank you!

HI HELLO so i typed out most of an answer to this like a month or two ago then it got deletd and this languished in my askbox since so let me try again and emphasize the stuff that i think is the most important when i'm making my furry aus

biological interest and diversity

i think the biggest thing that gets my goat when i look at other furry aus is the lack of animal diversity. and, i need to be clear here, this is ENTIRELY a personal gripe/preference- it just kind of annoys me when i see furry aus that are entirely familiar, domestic mammals, yknow? where at least half the characters are dogs and cats. like, no shade to people who do or like those, i cannot emphasize enough how this is a meaningless Me pet peeve, i just really really think furries in general should broaden their horizons and try out more out-there species. and i'm not perfect in this way either: there's an OBVIOUS bird bias in my choices, and a MASSIVE tetrapod bias: almost none of my furries are fish or inverts, despite fish species outnumbering tetrapod species, and invertebrate species outnumbering vertebrate species by massive orders of magnitude.

i think my point is: try getting more unconventional with it. i also really like including extinct species because that's just my jam. pterosaurs, man, consider them

i often will do wikipedia trawls for animals when choosing species for furry aus- i'll have a general idea of the animal i want (ie, horsefly, wallaby) and i'll get to peruse the various families/genera/species under those more general umbrellas til i find something that works either visually or symbolically better than the others.

i'll also say that there will often be a very obvious choice for characters- like, spider for annabelle cane, or something. i encourage, in cases like this, don't go with the obvious choice, see if you can find something more subtly meaningful and interesting. (see: a hummingbird for annabelle cane. they steal spiderwebs in order to weave their nests, but can become trapped in the webs instead and get eaten by the spider.) it can also help to actively try and choose animals- like inverts and fish- that don't usually immediately jump to mind for you.

i also highly recommend getting Specific with it. always do your best to choose a Species of animal, rather than a genus, family, or more general group. it's always more interesting.

2. The Process

so very first thing when i'm choosing a species for a characetr is ENTIRELY vibes-based. like what does this character Feel like. sometimes this step is skipped, if there's like, an obvious symbolic or mentioned-in-canon choice that would make more sense (see: condor callum crown). but most of the time for me: Vibes. i'm just gonna list a few of my dialtown furries and my thought process (as i remember it, may be inaccurate) for how i chose them? hopefully that helps a bit.

oliver, to me, feels like a soft and fluffy mammal. he's outgoing, friendly, kind of an in-your-face personality. just feels like a mammal to me! but he's also a complete freak, so i was like, oh, he has to be a marsupial or a monotreme. the Strange mammals! i decided that, from there, he feels most like one of the megapodes (kangaroos, wallabys, those sorts) to me. kangaroos look too scary and imposing, with a frightening Buff Man kind of vibe, so those were out. went to wallabies, because they get that cute fluffy mammal vibe that i wanted for him. i eventually settled on the yellow-footed rock wallaby: they have bold, stripey patterning that i think fits his vibe, and rufous coloration on their limbs that meshes well with his red color palette.

or let's take randy. vibes here were some sort of Trash Animal, those sorts like pigeons and raccoons that adapt well to living in human garbage and most people regard as a nuisance. randy also feels very Birdy to me. from there, i think it was fig who suggested an animal that preys upon swans, and that's really funny. i eventually landed on gulls: some larger gulls will hunt swan chicks, and gulls are a perfect epitome of Trash Animal. i went with the great black-backed gull in particular- randy jade being the biggest, most imposing, apex-predator ass gull is really funny to me. also: i like great black-backed gulls.

karen! she was pretty straightforward for me: karen very much felt like a bug. some sort of insect or arachnid was my starting point: i felt that the Bug Vibes fit her well and that the segmented leg look would work well for her visually. flies are a group i like a lot and felt fit well here- overlooked, often seen as generic or boring (but are actually really cool), and also i like them. and, like, i couldn't resist the pull of Oh She Should Be A Horsefly. She Needs To Be A Horsefly. much like for oliver, the species was chosen for visual reasons: needed to be brown or tan to complement her color scheme, and i didn't want it to be one of the like, larger/scarier horseflies. band-eyed brown horseflies fit her color scheme and are pretty to look at.

Now that's Wonderful Precure is finally concluded, I can do one of these! Yay! It is a team of 6, I'll hear no different, even if only 4 get Cure names. Time to rank our Wonderful Precure cast.

1. Daifuku (there's no yellow ¬.¬'')

Toei you said he was grey in the movie but yellow in the finale? Unsurprisingly, while our magical bunny boy and his human form only got about 10 mins of screen time (criminal) , still ten is still better than none at all and with a sense of gratitude that at least that means he's cannon! ( Toei, you cowards, you already gave us a magical bird boy, we could get a whole petting zoo going).

Our mute little bunny of coolness and attitude (XD he's Sonic with more edge) has been there from the start and it was very much this scene where I fell in love with the fluff ball. Situation was different but it was something I so badly needed to hear. So now I've actually sought out merch, with this quote printed out to be used as a daily reminder. Daifuku the best wing-bunny one could ask for!

2. Cure Lilian/ Mayu

Mayu is just super relatable, from her anxieties and nerves of speaking to new people and tripping over her words, to gaining confidence to share the things you love to do, whether others like it or not. To just being the best shipper support ever! She was that understandable big sister sort to both sides and neutral but what is really impressive is how the writing team never made her feel like a third wheel, the group dynamics and friendship still felt natural.

3. Cure Friendy/ Iroha

The actual leader of team Wonderful Precure and a pretty decent one at that. Iroha was the one who often came up with plans, she made the decisions and final calls, Iroha was the one the others followed and it was her sentiments that were usually the driving force on matters but she wasn't above being told different or to do something different because she was either wrong or they disagreed, she still remained very understanding.

4. Satoru

He should have been our mid-season! An initial great support, helpful but not too involved, until Toei made him get more involved and had him on the front lines too often, giving him all these scenes and moments suggesting he was going to be so much more and he's left standing their like a lemon while the others "fight". However, Satoru is the focus, the driving force on quite possibly, Precures best love angle! You couldn't help but root for the guy and I don't doubt most were crying during that confession scene, so sweet, so touching, so beautifully animated (pity all sort of fizzled out afterwards and got forgotten they even hooked up???) Still Toei denied us, Satoru and Iroha could have been an actual Cure couple, it could have added so much more depth and layers to the pair.

5. Cure Nyammy/ Yuki

Fight me Toei, Nyammy is freaking WHITE, her whole theme is snow, her hair, her main attire colour is to, so how did you get blue? Nyammy did have an arc, opening up, learning to trust and befriend the others, to be kinder, however, that's all well and good but our kitty just got declawed and tamed far too quickly, she would have been a great chance to challenge ideals off, find that middle ground but nope, just goes from fighting to hugging with little convincing.

6. Cure Wonderful/ Komugi

No, I don't dislike her per se but Komugi does the baton pass, which means by default Precure standards she is the leader and leader and Komugi don't even go in the same sentence. Couldn't be further from it, so she fails at the one job she was supposed to do. Komugi had a gimmick that was super, super under utilised, her best example was the Fuku episode and they sorta tried again for the finale but that didn't come together as naturally.
